Apple AirPods Pro 3 Review: Worth the Upgrade?

This AirPods Pro 3 review tackles the question every iPhone owner is asking: is Apple’s latest flagship earbud worth $249? After synthesizing reviews from What Hi-Fi?, SoundGuys, Tom’s Guide, DC Rainmaker and long-term owner reports, the answer is more complicated than Apple wants you to believe.

The AirPods Pro 3 launched on September 19, 2025, at the same $249 as the Pro 2. They bring class-leading noise cancellation, a built-in heart-rate sensor and genuine IP57 durability — but they also demand trade-offs on fit and case battery that no marketing sheet will tell you about.

Design and Fit: Redesigned Around 10,000 Ear Scans

Apple says it analyzed more than 10,000 3D ear scans and 100,000 hours of user research to redesign the Pro 3. The buds are slightly slimmer in the stem and fuller in the body, with an angled shape that aligns with the natural ear canal and tips rotated inward for a more secure fit.

The biggest change is the ear tips themselves: five sizes from XXS to L, with a thin layer of foam embedded inside the silicone. For ears that suit them, the seal is tighter and passive isolation is better than ever — and that seal is the foundation the upgraded noise cancellation stands on.

But the firmer new tips divide people. Some owners report soreness within 15 to 30 minutes, others find one earbud constantly feels loose, and there is still no XL option for larger ear canals. Run Apple’s Ear Tip Fit Test before judging — the size that worked on your Pro 2 may not be the right one here.

Sound Quality: Fuller Bass, Sharper Detail

What Hi-Fi? awarded the Pro 3 a perfect 5/5, describing the sound as spacious, dynamic and clear with voices. The new multiport acoustic architecture and custom high-excursion drivers deliver more punch in the low end and finer high-frequency detail than the Pro 2.

The tuning has shifted slightly toward a V-shaped signature, and a few reviewers note the treble can turn harsh or sibilant on certain tracks — listeners who preferred the Pro 2’s flatter response may want to audition first. Personalized spatial audio with head tracking remains excellent for movies.

One quirk worth knowing: transparency mode noticeably degrades music playback, flattening clarity and presence. The good news is that iOS 27 finally added a Custom EQ with Low, Mid and High controls, stored on the AirPods themselves so your tuning follows you to iPad and Mac.

Active Noise Cancellation: Apple’s Strongest Yet

If one feature justifies the upgrade, it is this. Apple claims the Pro 3 remove up to twice as much noise as the Pro 2 and four times as much as the originals, and independent testing measured roughly 90% noise reduction versus 83% on the previous generation.

In practice, plane cabin drone and subway rumble vanish harder than before. Owners who compared the two generations directly call the step up noticeable if not dramatic, and firmware updates since launch have pushed ANC even further.

The catch: this ANC needs a proper seal, so a poor tip fit robs you of the headline feature. A small number of owners also report a faint hollow hiss with ANC engaged — Apple has replaced affected units under warranty.

Heart Rate Sensing: Earbuds That Track Workouts

The optical heart-rate sensor uses photoplethysmography, pulsing infrared light 256 times per second, and it is Apple’s smallest sensor yet. Start a workout in the Fitness app and the buds feed data straight into Apple Health, tracking over 50 workout types.

Accuracy is the surprise. DC Rainmaker tested the Pro 3 against chest straps and watches through steady runs, intervals and indoor cycling and found they tracked closely throughout — good enough to leave the Apple Watch at home. Specialist fitness testing found the same for steady-state workouts.

The limits are software, not hardware. The buds do not broadcast over the standard Bluetooth heart-rate profile, so Garmin watches, Peloton and other third-party gear cannot read the data. Positioning also matters: if the buds shift during intense exercise, readings get less reliable. A GymKit update now lets compatible treadmills and bikes sync heart rate through your iPhone.

    Live Translation: A Futuristic Beta

Live Translation is the headline AI feature, translating in-person conversations in real time through Apple Intelligence. It launched with English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and German, and now covers 11 languages and variants including Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese — and it reached the EU in late 2025.

When it works, it feels genuinely futuristic. But Apple still labels it a beta in Settings: complex conversations introduce delays, and accents or technical terminology can trip it up. It also requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence enabled.

Notably, Apple brought Live Translation to AirPods Pro 2 owners through a software update — so it is not a reason to buy the Pro 3 on its own. Studio-quality mic recording, however, is a real and usable improvement for calls.

Battery Life: The Trade-Off Nobody Asked For

Per-charge battery is a clear win: up to 8 hours of ANC listening, up from 6 on the Pro 2, and SoundGuys measured an impressive 8 hours 42 minutes. That covers a full workday of calls and music or most of a transatlantic flight without touching the case.

The trade-off is the case: total capacity dropped from 30 hours to 24. The Pro 2’s case could go days or even a week between charges; the Pro 3’s case demands more regular attention. Leave heart-rate sensing on all day and per-charge time falls to 6.5 hours, while the Hearing Aid feature in transparency mode stretches to 10.

A five-minute top-up buys about an hour of listening, and the case charges over MagSafe, Qi, an Apple Watch charger or USB-C. But there is no cable in the box, so budget for a USB-C cable if you do not already own one.

Hearing Health Features: A Quiet Superpower

The Pro 3 expand Apple’s end-to-end hearing health experience. The Hearing Test now works in a broader range of background conditions and takes about five minutes in Settings, while the Hearing Aid feature adds automatic Conversation Boost with 67% more battery life in transparency mode.

For users with mild to moderate hearing loss, the clinical-grade Hearing Aid functionality is a meaningful accessibility win. Active Hearing Protection rounds out the suite by guarding against loud environmental noise.

The frustration is availability: not every feature is certified in every region yet, with Active Hearing Protection only recently rolling out in the EU and UK. Check what is live in your country before counting on these.

    Setup and Everyday Use

Setup is classic Apple: open the case next to your iPhone, tap Connect, and iOS walks you through the Ear Tip Fit Test. Press the stem to play and pause, press and hold to switch modes, and swipe for volume.

Ecosystem integration runs deeper than any rival — automatic device switching, Find My with precision guidance from the case’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, and seamless Handoff with your Mac and iPad. On Android, you get basic pairing and music only, so these are effectively iPhone-only. If you’re building out an iPhone-first setup, our roundup of the best phone accessories in 2026 pairs well with what these earbuds unlock.

What is missing: no aptX or LDAC codec support — still Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC and AAC — and the physical case reset button is gone. The same H2 chip carries over from the Pro 2, so this is a refinement generation, not a silicon leap.

    Durability, Repairability and the Case

The IP57 rating covers both buds and case, a real upgrade from the Pro 2’s IP54. Full submersion in fresh water up to one meter for 30 minutes, dust, sweat and rain — these are genuinely workout-proof.

The case keeps its speaker for Find My alerts and a lanyard loop. But a teardown found the Pro 3 nearly impossible to repair, and the batteries are not user-replaceable, so expect capacity to fade over a few years. A small number of owners report buds that stop holding a charge within months — not widespread, but at this price AppleCare+ is worth considering.

    Price and Value

At Apple’s full $249 list price these are a premium buy, justified if you will actually use the noise cancelling, battery and fitness features. But Apple discounts these fast: retailers — especially Amazon — have sold them between $189.99 and $199.99 through 2026, with occasional dips lower during major sales events.

At around $199 they become the obvious pick over the open-ear AirPods 5: far stronger noise cancelling, three extra hours per charge and heart-rate tracking. Amazon’s 4.4-star average from over 15,000 ratings suggests most buyers land satisfied.

Pro 2 owners whose buds fit well and feel fresh can afford to wait for a sale — the honest truth is these do not sound twice as good as the Pro 2. To complete the kit around them, check out the top 10 accessories of 2026 for cases, chargers and workout gear.

    Pros and Cons

    Pros

    • Apple’s strongest noise cancelling — roughly 2x better than the Pro 2
    • Up to 8 hours per charge with ANC on; 10 hours in Hearing Aid mode
    • Heart-rate sensor that matched chest straps in independent testing
    • IP57 dust and water resistance on buds and case
    • Five foam-infused tip sizes including new XXS; Live Translation and hearing features are genuinely useful

    Cons

    • Case battery dropped from 30 to 24 hours total
    • Firmer tips cause soreness or slipping for some; no XL size
    • Transparency mode noticeably degrades music quality
    • No high-res Bluetooth codecs; limited Android support
    • Nearly impossible to repair; no charging cable in the box

Who Should Buy — and Who Should Skip

Buy them if: you commute or fly regularly and want the strongest ANC in an earbud; you train and want heart-rate tracking without a watch; you are coming from original AirPods or Pro 1; or you can get them at the ~$199 street price.

Skip them if: in-ear tips never work for you; you need heart rate on Garmin, Peloton or other non-Apple gear; you are on Android; or your Pro 2 already fit well and feel fine — wait for a deeper discount.

    FAQs

Do AirPods Pro 2 ear tips fit AirPods Pro 3?

No. Apple redesigned the tips for the Pro 3 and sells Pro 3-specific replacements; Pro 2 tips are not listed as compatible.

Do AirPods Pro 3 come with a charging cable?

No. Apple sells the USB-C cable separately, though any USB-C cable you already own will work with the case.

Is the AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate sensor accurate?

Yes, for steady-state workouts. DC Rainmaker tested it against chest straps and watches through runs, intervals and indoor cycling and found it tracked closely. It only feeds Apple Fitness and Health, not Garmin or Peloton.

Can AirPods Pro 3 work as hearing aids?

They include Apple’s Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, where Apple has made them available. Availability varies by country, and you need a compatible iPhone with up-to-date software.

My AirPods Pro 3 keep falling out. What should I do?

Run the Ear Tip Fit Test in Settings and try every size, including XXS — the new foam-infused tips are firmer, so your Pro 2 size may not be right. If nothing seals, return them within the window.

Do AirPods Pro 2 cases fit AirPods Pro 3?

No — buy a cover made for the Pro 3. Case makers list the Pro 3 as a separate size from the Pro 2.

AirPods Pro 3 Review: Final Verdict — Worth the Upgrade?

For iPhone owners, yes — with one condition. The Pro 3 deliver the best noise cancellation in any earbud, 8-hour battery per charge, genuinely accurate heart-rate tracking and real IP57 durability at the same $249 the Pro 2 launched at. Scores back it up: 5/5 from What Hi-Fi?, Editor’s Choice from Tom’s Guide and 8.6/10 from YourReviews.

The condition is fit. Everything great about these earbuds — the ANC, the sound, the sensor accuracy — depends on a good seal, and the firmer foam tips will not suit every ear. Try all five sizes, and at ~$199 on sale, the value argument becomes very hard to beat. Pro 2 owners who are happy can wait; everyone else, these are the AirPods to beat.
